Curaçao Itinerary: 7 Days, Day by Day (Local Guide)

A week is the sweet spot for a first trip to Curaçao: enough time to see Willemstad properly, work through the west-coast beaches, get out to Klein Curaçao, and still keep a lazy day or two in reserve. This is the route locals actually use, grouped by geography so you’re not crossing the island twice a day, with real drive times and fees. The pace builds gently: city and south first, then the longer western drives once you’ve found your feet, with the flexibility to shuffle days around the wind and sea.

TL;DR: Days 1–2 are Willemstad and the southern beach clubs. Day 3 is the classic west-coast run (Grote Knip, Kleine Knip, Cas Abou). Day 4 is the big Klein Curaçao boat day. Day 5 is nature: Christoffel Park, Shete Boka and the far-west turtles. Day 6 is diving, snorkeling and culture. Day 7 is a slow last swim before your flight. Rent a car for the whole week.

Getting around: Pick up the rental at the airport and keep it all week. The island splits into two halves, Banda Abou (the rural west) and the busier east around Willemstad, and this plan works outward from the city so you’re rarely backtracking. Fill up before any west-coast day; stations are sparse past Sint Willibrordus, and the coastal tracks near Westpunt are rough on small cars.

Day 1: Willemstad’s old town

Ease in on foot. Explore Willemstad’s historic center, a UNESCO site: cross the Queen Emma floating bridge, shoot the Handelskade houses from Otrobanda, and browse Punda’s shops and the floating market. The colourful history walking tour is a good primer on the fortresses and the old Jewish quarter. Lunch at Kome; sunset dinner up at Fort Nassau overlooking the harbor, then drinks in Pietermaai at Mundo Bizarro or the Cascada Rooftop.

Day 2: Jan Thiel & Mambo

A gentle beach-club day 15 minutes east of town. Set up at Jan Thiel Beach or Papagayo Beach Club, or hit the Mambo Beach boulevard where Bonita, Chill Beach Bar and Cabana line up along the sand. Snorkel around the calm Caracasbaai peninsula in the afternoon. Dinner at Zanzibar on Jan Thiel, then happy hour at Zest.

Day 3: The west coast coves

Your first real drive west. Grote Knip (free, ~45 min from Willemstad) is the postcard cove; Klein Kenepa / Kleine Knip is the quieter one five minutes away. For shade and a beach bar, Cas Abou Beach (~ANG 12 / US$7 per car, closed Mondays) has the softest sand on the island. Finish the day at cliff-framed Playa Lagun or Daaibooi Beach. Stay west for dinner at the Koraal Rooftop Terrace above the cliffs.

Day 4: Klein Curaçao

Give the uninhabited island its own day. Book the Klein Curaçao day trip ahead (about US$120–150 per person, roughly 08:30–18:00). Boats leave from Caracas Bay for the 1.5–2 hour crossing to the lighthouse, shipwreck and blindingly clear shallows; snorkel gear and lunch are usually included. The open-water crossing can be rough, so keep this day flexible and watch the forecast. Prefer to stay closer to shore? A powerboat tour of the south coast is a shorter alternative.

Day 5: Parks & the far west

Leave early. The parks close at 14:00. Start at Christoffel National Park (open 6:00–14:00, ~US$15); climb Mount Christoffel before 10am or drive the loop. Next door, Shete Boka National Park shows off the crashing north-coast surf. Then chase the far-west beaches: green turtles at Playa Grandi, the snorkel-friendly Playa Kalki, and the clifftop view over Playa Forti. A private jeep tour is a good option if you’d rather not drive the rougher tracks yourself.

Day 6: Reefs & culture

A more relaxed pace. Snorkel the double reef at Playa Porto Mari (~US$3–6 pp) or the house reef at Blue Bay Beach; serious divers can arrange the Rediho, Elvin’s and Plane Wreck dive. In the afternoon, add some history at the Landhuis Kenepa / Tula Museum, tied to the 1795 slave uprising, or the Landhuis Bloemhof art estate. Dinner in Pietermaai at Saint Tropez Ocean Club.

Day 7: Slow morning near town

Keep it easy before your flight. A last calm swim at Blue Bay, Marie Pompoen or Director’s Bay, a final wander through Punda for chichi-doll souvenirs, and a farewell lunch at Gouverneur de Rouville looking across at the floating bridge. Leave two to three hours before an international flight. The airport is 20 minutes from the city but check-in queues build fast at peak departure times.

• Rainy day? Move the museum-and-city parts of Day 1 or Day 6 forward, or duck into the Hato Caves (US$10 adult, hourly tours 9:00–15:00).
• Too windy for the west or far-west? Swap in the sheltered south: Caracasbaai, Pirate Bay, Marie Pompoen or Blue Bay.
• Sea too rough for Klein Curaçao? Push Day 4 later in the week (a week gives you room to wait for a calm window) or swap in the submarine tour along the south coast.
