Renting a Car in Curaçao: Companies, Prices & Tips

Curaçao’s beaches are scattered around the coast and the buses do not go to the good ones, so renting a car is the single best decision most visitors make. Here is what it costs, who to rent from, and what nobody warns you about the roads.

TL;DR: Yes, rent a car. The prettiest beaches sit 30 to 60 minutes apart and public transport barely reaches them. An economy car runs USD 30 to 45 a day in low season and more around Christmas and summer. You drive on the right, and your national licence is all you need.

Do you need a car in Curaçao?

For a week on the island, almost certainly. The best swimming and snorkelling spots, places like Grote Knip, Cas Abou and Playa Lagun, lie along the southwest coast with nothing but scrubland in between. The public Konvoi buses run mainly between Willemstad and residential neighbourhoods, not to the coves, and they are infrequent. Taxis are fine for a night out but add up fast: a one-way fare from Willemstad to the western beaches can pass USD 50.

If you are staying two or three days near Willemstad and only want the city plus a beach or two, you can get by on taxis. For anything longer, or if you plan to go beach-hopping or follow a full one-week route, a car earns its keep by day two.

Book by the week and the daily rate drops. Almost every company blocks a deposit on a credit card, so bring one even if you plan to pay by debit. Debit-only rentals exist at some local firms but usually carry a higher excess.

What licence do you need, and how old must you be?

Your home driving licence is valid on Curaçao for up to six months, so tourists from the Netherlands, the rest of the EU, the UK, the US and Canada do not need an International Driving Permit. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, an IDP helps; otherwise skip it.

The minimum age is usually 21, sometimes 23 or 25 for larger cars, and most companies want you to have held your licence for at least a year. Drivers under 25 often pay a small young-driver surcharge.

What are the roads like in Curaçao?

The main roads are paved and easy. The moment you turn off toward a beach, the surface can change. Secondary roads have real potholes, and several western beaches, Playa Jeremi, Playa Kalki and the tracks around Shete Boka, sit at the end of unpaved washboard roads where a small car crawls and a compact SUV is far happier.

Watch for wildlife. Iguanas dart across the tarmac, goats and the occasional donkey wander the verge, and both are worst around dawn and dusk. Take dirt roads slowly, keep your distance behind other cars to avoid flying stones, and do not rely on phone signal in the far west. Fuel, parking and insurance

Petrol is sold by the litre and priced in guilders, usually a little over USD 1 a litre, though the pump price tracks the world oil market, so check before you assume. Stations cluster around Willemstad and the bigger villages and thin out toward Westpunt, so fill up before a west-coast day.

Parking is free at nearly every beach and shopping centre. In central Willemstad you pay a small hourly fee in Punda and Otrobanda, so keep coins or a card handy.

On insurance, most rates include a collision damage waiver, but read the excess (in Dutch, eigen risico), often USD 500 to 1,000, and check what it leaves out. Tyres, the undercarriage and damage on unpaved roads are commonly excluded, which matters exactly when you drive to those western beaches. If you plan to leave the paved network, a zero-excess upgrade or separate rental-car insurance is worth the money.
