At the entrance to Christoffel Park, you'll find Landhuis Savonet. The plantation house was part of one of Curaçao's largest plantations, with extensive agricultural lands and livestock.
Over the years, many agricultural commodities were experimented with. For example, aloe vera, corn, pumpkin, potatoes, and peanuts were grown at Landhuis Savonet. From 1840 onwards, there was also a cotton plantation, cochineal was cultivated (for the dye carmine), and even Merino sheep were raised.
After the abolition of slavery on Curaçao in 1863, Landhuis Savonet remained one of the best-managed plantations on the island. For instance, American plows were used on the plantation, various dams were built for irrigation, and sheep were still raised, with fresh sheep's milk being transported to Willemstad by car.
Tip: visit the plantation house after climbing Mount Christoffel. This is a must-do during your vacation in Curaçao, and entrance to the Savonet Museum is included in your park entrance fee.
